US National Park Service is Hiring a CUSTODIAL WORKER (MVO) Near St. Louis, MO

Duties

Clean and maintain the Gateway Arch complex which includes the employee office and work areas, as well as the areas that are accessible to the general public such as the museum areas (galleries, exhibit rooms), visitor center areas (lobbies, restrooms, hallways), and the monument (trams, tram load zones, observation deck) while adhering to daily/hourly tasking deadlines. Use commercial/industrial janitorial materials, tools, and equipment while following prescribed cleaning methods for every-day-use surfaces as well as surfaces requiring historical preservation such as wood and stone floors (maple, oak, pine, limestone, marble, terrazzo), doors, banisters, columns, pilasters, chandeliers, and furniture (mahogany, oak, cherrywood). Dispose of heavy/bulky bags of waste materials and maintain containers in clean, sanitary condition. Use heavy duty powered equipment, such as floor scrubbers, vacuum cleaners, floor buffers, burnishers, and high-pressure hot water cleaners for carpets. Make minor adjustments to such equipment while in use to ensure proper operation. Operate a light duty motorized vehicle for transporting personnel, material, and equipment. Pick up litter on lawns, steps and sidewalks. Wash and disinfect picnic tables. Remove snow from steps, porticos, ramps, and sidewalks. Assist with moving bulk packaging and specific mail transporting. Clean the upper Arch observation deck encompassing the ceiling, windows, walls, port-a-potty, steep stairways, and a significantly inclined floor surface (carpet). Independently keep restrooms clean, orderly, and in sanitary condition. Clean restroom fixtures consisting of toilet bowls, urinals, lavatories and service sinks with operating valves, faucets, drains, and exposed pipes; electric hand dryers; dispensers for soap, towels, toilet tissue, and sanitary napkins, refuse receptacles; and toilet partitions including their doors. Clean furnishings such as tables, desks, chairs, sofas, benches, and book and exhibit cases. Clean glass, plastic, walk-off mats, runners and throw rugs. Clean high-traffic areas such as entrance ways, hallways, elevators, escalators, ramps, and steep stairways. Clean Arch tram load zones and tram capsules. Provide assistance during special events and activities when required. Many of the tasks employ the use of physical dexterity.

  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old

Physical Demands: Moderately heavy physical effort is required when: using ladder and scaffolds to clean walls, ceilings, windows, ceiling fixtures, etc.; operating powered equipment; removing cans of or other containers of trash; and occasionally lifts objects weighing over 50 pounds.

Working Conditions: Usually works indoors in areas, which normally have adequate, heat, light, and ventilation. Is exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions used in stripping floors, etc. Care is required to avoid serious injuries when working on ladders and scaffolds and when using heavy powered equipment. Occasionally works outdoors in possible inclement weather conditions and/or extreme temperatures.
The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.
